The heavenly scents of cooking onions and hot coffee urge me from my dreams, and as I slowly wake, I hum appreciatively. I don’t know when’s the last time I'd slept so soundly—definitely sometime before I left New York.

Soft light filters through the large picture window of Alexei’s bedroom, and I’m amazed that I managed to sleep later than him once again. I’m normally a very early riser. From the looks of the skyline, I would guess it’s six, maybe seven o’clock.

Rolling contentedly onto my back, I take another deep breath of the mouth-watering scent. Then I sit up and take my time climbing out of bed.

Rather than going to the kitchen naked, where I know we left our clothes last night, I open Alexei’s closet and step inside to find a soft button-down I like. Wearing it like a tunic, with just the bottom few buttons holding it closed, I pad softly down the hallway and into the open kitchen.

“Morning,” Alexei says, his eyes observing me with silent appreciation.

“Morning,” I agree, joining him at the stove to see just what he’s cooking.

He pauses stirring the egg and vegetable scramble in the pan to lean down and kiss me. My stomach flutters involuntarily.

“Coffee’s ready,” he says, gesturing with his chin before he returns his attention to the stove. “Do you want toast?”

“That sounds nice,” I say as I pour myself a steaming cup of joe. I leave mine without cream or sugar.

Though I enjoy the taste more with flavoring, it’s important that I think about everything I put in my body, especially during performance season. I already splurged with clam chowder yesterday. Now, breakfast today. I suspect I’m going to have to watch my diet closely if I plan on spending time with Alexei.

While he seems to eat healthy, a body his size needs far more calories than I’m allowed if I want to maintain my optimal dancer’s weight. Still, I can feel the pounds looming just from enjoying the delicious smell of sauteed vegetables.

Rather than stand back and watch him prepare a meal for me, I get to work on the toast. It takes a bit of searching, as I don’t know my way around his kitchen, but he seems content to let me find my way.

It feels surprisingly natural to work together in the kitchen. We shift around each other as if we’d been cooking together for years, and it makes my stomach flip-flop in funny ways. I’ve never done a real relationship before, but I find I’m rather excited by the prospect of dipping my toes in to see how this goes.
